Four arrested for murder of Bangladeshi shopkeeper

THE Park Road SAPS Crime Prevention Unit has arrested four suspects aged between 21 and 34 years old for the murder of a 45- year-old Bangladeshian national. A 21-year-old woman was arrested for defeating the ends of justice and being an illegal immigrant in Phase 4, Manaung.

On Friday, 10 January 2014 at about 05:00, while busy with their normal duty patrols, police received a tip-off regarding suspects who were involved in a murder of a Bangladeshian national in Kagisanong, Mangaung. The police swiftly followed the information that led to four suspects being arrested.

The suspect told the police what happened and pointed out other suspects involved. The police went to a house in Phase four looking for the other suspects and on their arrival at the house, they found a woman who was questioned about the suspect.

She told the police nobody was the house. Because of their suspicion the police requested to search the house. During the search, one suspect was found hiding behind the curtains and police recovered a stolen plasma TV, laptop, sound mixer, a bag of dagga, a stolen white Citi Golf and a 7.65mm pistol with ten rounds.

Park Road Crime Prevention Unit teamed up with the Vehicle Identification Unit and three stolen vehicles, a white Opel Corsa, a green Opel Astra were recovered in MK square near MUCPP. A white Mazda bakkie which was hijacked on Wednesday in Bloemanda were also recovered.

The murder occurred on Wednesday, 08 January 2014 at about 13:30 when the deceased was busy off loading stock from a bakkie into a shop in Kagisanong, Mangaung, when the five suspects approached and demanded money. The deceased refused and one suspect threatened to shoot him. He refused again. The suspect then took out a firearm and shot the deceased on the neck, he died. The suspects could not steal anything and they fled with an unknown car.

The four suspects were charged with murder, possession of suspected stolen property, possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition and dealing with dagga. One man and a woman aged between 21and 25 believed to be Lesotho nationals were arrested for being illegal immigrants. The woman will also be charged for defeating the ends of justice.

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.

“We thank our members for their swift respond on the information received and the community for giving us information to ensure that criminals have no place in our communities,” said The Free State Provincial Commissioner Lt General Simon Mpembe.
