Former police official and a civilian convicted

The Bloemfontein Magistrates Court convicted Bontle Mpolokeng Monenyane (41) and Refilwe Tumelo Koetle (33) for charges of corruption, kidnapping, and attempted extortion.

According to Captain Christopher Singo, Monenyane and Koetle appeared on Friday, 10 May 2024.

“On 15 December 2017, Monenyane, a former police official who was attached to Kagisanong SAPS, and Koetle, a civilian, approached the complainant and alleged that his brother was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property. They further told the complainant that the father of Koetle paid an amount of R10,000 in bail for her brother to be released. Koetle is the ex-girlfriend of the complainant’s brother. The accused demanded R10000 from the complainant,” said Singo.

He added that the complainant did not believe what the accused were telling her about the arrest of her brother and the bail amount.

“She then reported the matter to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation in Bloemfontein. A trap operation was then activated by the police. On the same day, the police and the complainant visited the workplace of her brother. Upon arrival, the brother informed the police and his sister that Monenyane and his ex-girlfriend Koetle came to his workplace and took his bank card together with the pin number to withdraw R10,000, which they allege is for bail purposes,” explained Singo.

“They told him that they would bring the card at around twelve o’clock. The accused then later came back and forcefully took the victim to his workplace and drove with him to the Bochabela township. The police then followed them up and arrested them. The accused were found in possession of the victim’s bank card,” he further said.

The case against Monenyane and Koetle has been postponed to 24 June 2024.
