Former Free State MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Dan Kgothule has lost his defamation of character case against The Weekly Newspaper.

Kgothule was suing the publication for R250 000 after it published an article in August 2010, during his term, claiming among others that senior staff complained about the MEC's behaviour; that Macufe showed no profit under his leadership and that Pacofs was in chaos.

Kgothule said he will know the reasons behind today's judgement in the Bloemfontein High Court in two days. In his opinion, the judgment was bizarre.

“The unfortunate thing is that it would encourage a situation where people without facts continue to write stories what other people stand for or what they represent. All the issues that were written about me in The Weekly Newspaper, are lies, they were intended to destroy me. Other people happen to have the power of the pen and it very sad that it will continue to be used as an instrument,” he said.

The case has been dismissed with cost.
