Former FET accountant gets eight years

GALOOME SHOPANE Jacques Wilhelm Grobler has been sentenced to eight years direct imprisonment in the Bloemfontein Regional court today. Grobler, a former accountant at Motheo FET College was found guilty of stealing R1.3 million from the college between April 2009 and March 2011.

He was charged with 60 counts of fraud, theft and money laundering.

During mitigation proceedings the defence argued that the money Grobler stole was not the only reason for Motheo College’s financial woes.

It said that the R1.3 million was only a fraction of the unexplained shortfall of R23 million, which was confirmed by college’s principal.
