Former Bloemfontein Celtic player jailed on murder charges

Bloemfontein. – Free State police are investigating a case of attempted murder and malicious damage to property, after a former Bloemfontein Celtic player was arrested in Wilgehof in the city last night.

The player (not known yet) is to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s court on Thursday, while the woman, believed to be his 30-year old wife, is in the MediClinic Bloemfontein with burn wounds.

The woman sustained burn wounds to her face, arms and legs. Police spokesperson Chaka Marope said the suspect will only be named once he appeared in court.

According to the police statement, at about 23h00 last night, the woman arrived home and whilst waiting at the gate the suspect approached her and moments later a vicious argument ensued between the two.

It is further alleged that the suspect went inside the house and came with a bottle containing unknown flammable liquid inside with piece of cloth in which he set it alight and threw the bottle inside the vehicle whilst the woman still sitting inside.

The victim was rescued by her neighbours who also assisted in distinguishing the fire and alerted the police. The suspect was arrested on the scene and taken to Parkweg Police Station for detention.
