Foreign national arrested for alleged fraud

The Free State police in Virginia have arrested a 44 year old man following allegations of fraud.

Police spokesperson, Palesa Thabana confirmed that police were alerted after a foreign national was falsely presenting himself as a South African citizen. “The suspect was traced and found in the Virginia central area. Preliminary investigations were conducted, and information received from the Department of Home Affairs confirmed that the identity document found in possession of the suspect was a fraudulent document,” she explained.

Thabana further revealed that it is alleged that the suspect placed a photo of himself on the identification document that had someone else’s personal information. She added that It is unknown at this stage the number of crimes committed using the fraudulent document. Police investigations are underway.

Police confiscated one green South African identity book alleged to be used in the alleged misrepresentation. The suspect is facing charges of fraud and contravention of the illegal immigration act. He is expected to appear in the Virginia Magistrate’s Court soon.
