Focus must shift toward the boy child in fight against GBV

The Department of Basic Education is of the view that the focus must shift towards the boy child in the country’s ongoing fight against the scourge of sexual violence.

Chief Director responsible for Social Inclusion and Partnerships in Education at the department, Patricia Watson warns, patriarchy affects boys too and creates a very violent environment for a young man to form his identity.

Watson said this in her address at the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation’s first biennial Thari Programme Conference at Kopano Nokeng Conference outside Bloemfontein on Friday.

Watson says patriarchy leaves very little space for boys to talk about being victims of sexual abuse which can perpetuate violence in our society.

The government has in previous years placed great focus on the girl child, creating programmes for her.

Now they recognise that they have seen a decline in the performance of male learners as a result.
