CHOC Regional Manager of the Free State and Kalahari, Ruth Meth, urges people to 'Have a Heart and Wear a Sole on 12 February 2021.

Now in its second year, the Flip Flop Day of the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC) is an annual event which will be celebrated on 12 February 2021 this year. Locals are encouraged to ‘Have a Heart and Wear a Sole’ in support of fighting childhood cancer and giving patients and their families the support that they need.

Last year, the first ever Flip Flop Day raised well over R1, 5 million for CHOC, which has several homes across the country. According to Regional Manager of the Free State and Kalahari, Ruth Meth, the aim of the campaign is to raise both funding as well as awareness of childhood cancer, which is often hushed away by society.

“Childhood cancer is not something that people easily talk about. If we can open up conversation about it, early detection will become more common and children will have better odds to be healed and go on to live a full life. Cancer steals away a child’s future but we want to help to get it back,” she said.

The campaign is supported by PNA Stationers and Tekkie Town, where along with CHOC’s offices people will be able to pop into and grab their Flip Flop Day sticker. “I’m a strong believer in partnerships because the more people talk about this, the more we can achieve. You can really see the effect when different parts of society come together whether they are businesses, schools or churches to create solutions for one problem,” explained Meth.

Flip Flop Day also aims to bring fun and colour to the daunting issue of childhood cancer. “This is our own in-house campaign that will go towards feeding our children, paying towards electricity and other expenses in our homes. Flip flops are great because they’re about being fun and laid-back, so we hope lots of people will be taking part,” she added.
People can also get a Flip Flop Day sticker for R10 at the local CHOC office at 19 Stegmann Street in Universitas.
