The first road crash at the start of the long weekend in the Free State has claimed three lives and left two with serious injuries this morning.

The Department of Health, on its Twitter page, reports that provincial Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to an accident on the R700 between Hoopstad and Bultfontein, just outside Bloemfontein.

This brings the number of fatalities in accidents reported this week to at least 12, with over 15 injuries ranging from minor to serious also being reported.

This week at least 3 accidents were reported; a major one included two minibus taxis which collided head-on and claimed four lives on the R703 near Verkeerdevlei, 39 kilometres south-east of Brandfort in the Masilonyane municipality.

EMS spokesperson, Sipho Towa said the deceased were all declared dead on the scene. Towa added injured patients were transferred to the Pelonomi, Busamed and Dr JS Moroka Hospitals in the province.
