Fighting hunger through gardens in Bloemfontein

As food prices continue to soar and unemployment remains high, food insecurity has become a growing concern in Bloemfontein. For many households, putting a nutritious meal on the table is a daily struggle, but local organisations and community projects are stepping in to offer sustainable solutions.

Across Mangaung, initiatives focused on urban farming and community gardening are helping residents grow their own food and reduce dependence on costly store-bought produce. These projects not only provide fresh vegetables but also equip participants with the skills to maintain long-term food security.

Among those leading the charge is Lenosa Mohapang, who is involved in several gardening programmes, including one at National Hospital and another under the Access organisation at the University of the Free State (UFS). “Our main goal is to equip residents with the necessary skills to maintain their own gardens,” said Mohapang.

At UFS, head of engaged scholarship in student life Gernus Terblanche told Bloemfontein Courant how the gardening initiative at the institution helps sustain students who are affected by food security. “The community garden was started to supplement the food environment office and provide fresh produce to students who are struggling and don’t have funding.”

Occupational therapist at National Hospital Corne Thomas highlighted the importance of the gardening initiatives. Thomas said the idea came after many of her patients complained about lack of food while she was treating them. “We started the project because we saw a lot of patients have problems that we couldn’t solve in therapy. And patients using chronic medication, can’t take them on an empty stomach.”

Thomas further added that the initiatives come with challenges, and that they were only able to run two cycles of eight weeks each due to limited funding. She calls on residents to assist in any way they can – whether by donating old gardening equipment, volunteering, or offering sponsorships. Those interested can contact Thomas on 079 576 1714.
