GALOOME SHOPANE In just less than twelve hours the the annual GWK Cherry festival will take off in Ficksburg in the eastern Free State.

The festival made its first appearance to cherry lovers 45 years ago and is still going strong.

Festival coordinator Gavin Boy says the Cherry Festival has grown much. The first festival hosted 300 people while this year they are expecting about 25000 people.

Boy says there are a lot of cherry products coming in like cherry liqueur and Belgian cherry beer. There will also be activities for children.

“We’ve created a lot of family entertainment and everything is centered around very unique cherry products. Bringing family entertainment and cherries will be creating an a bit of excitement for people in the area. It’s cherry fever, so come survive it with us,” says Boy.

The festival will end on the 23rd of November.
