Festive season launch at Gariep Dam

The Free State Department of Finance, Economic Development, and Tourism is set to launch its summer tourism campaign at Gariep Dam this Thursday (06/10).

According to the department, the campaign aims to promote affordable and memorable travel experiences while encouraging both domestic and international tourists to explore the hidden gems of the Free State this festive season.

Visitors attending the launch can also explore the Gariep Dam Nature Reserve, which offers accommodation and camping facilities within walking distance of the iconic Gariep Dam wall — South Africa’s largest dam. Standing 88 metres high and 914 metres long, the dam serves as a vital source of water storage and hydroelectric power. When full, it spans over 370 square kilometres and holds nearly 6 000 million cubic litres of water.

MEC Ketso Makume said the decision to launch the festive season campaign from a boat on the dam was symbolic of the province’s vibrant tourism offerings.

“Launching the festive season campaign from the boat is intended to inspire tourists to travel throughout the Free State and experience the diverse range of tourism attractions across the province. The Free State is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, offering breathtaking landscapes and unforgettable experiences,” said Makume.
