Exploring the city on two wheels

While most students spend their time in libraries, one young agricultural student at Kovsies is uncovering a different side of Bloemfontein – on his motorbike.

Ashley Nhlapo, 21, is a passionate biker since the age of eleven. He’s turned his love for two wheels into an unexpected adventure through his Hidden Gems series, where he documents some of the city’s lesser-known spots and shares them with his growing online audience.

“Before I started riding and exploring Bloem, I always thought the city was boring and had nothing to offer. I thought it was just a place for students to study. But now that I ride around, I’ve come to realise there are so many hidden gems – and I’m falling in love with the city.”

He does most of his exploring in the form of a “solo date”, which he describes as therapeutic and calming. “You are your own best company. The biggest fear for many is being alone with their own thoughts. This lifestyle loudly proclaims that solitude is not loneliness.”

Nhlapo explained that he never plans his adventures. Instead, he simply hops on his bike and lets the road guide him, allowing inspiration to flow naturally from wherever the journey leads.

“My favourite hidden gem has to be Airborne Café (at New Tempe Airport). How I found it was very interesting – I was riding with a buddy of mine when we spotted a black road. We followed it to see where it led and ended up in one of Bloemfontein’s most beautiful places.”

He shared that many of his followers are often surprised to discover places they’ve never heard of, despite having lived in Bloemfontein their entire lives. “There’s a certain restaurant that messaged me to thank me for promoting their business – it’s gained traction since my video,” he added.

Looking ahead, Nhlapo is preparing for a 1,000-kilometre ride from Bloemhof, North West, to Cape Town this festive season. Along the way, he plans to continue uncovering hidden gems, sharing the unique stories and secret spots that lie off the beaten path.
