The 12 expelled Central University of the Free State student representatives are in the process of appealing the decision taken by the institute. This comes after an internal disciplinary hearing the university had against students involved in protests earlier this year, over the refusal of Lesotho citizens without necessary documentation being given admission to study.
Expelled SRC President David Makhoali said they sought legal advice and will submit their appeal letters to the university by next week.
“We went to seek legal advice, met a practitioner in the legal sector who is willing to assist in the drafting of the appeal letter. Once all documents are submitted, by Monday the latest, we will be submitting our letters to the university” said Makhoali
He added they will be submitting as a collective, even though the legal practitioner agreed to assist each person individually.
“Our way forward is to submit, and hope the university will accept us back,” he said.
Meanwhile CUT spokesperson Dan Maritz said the students were given 14 days to appeal, but are still allowed to attend classes and write exams.
The suspension is effective from July 21. Furthermore there is no communication with the students and university.
