Ewie Cronjé has passed away

The Free State sporting great, Ewie Cronjé, passed away on Monday at the age of 80.
Cronjé had been suffering from cancer for the best part of 10 years, and as a family member stated, he was a real fighter. Cronjés’ battle started with pancreatic cancer and more recently he had been battling with stomach cancer.

Cronjé who was the father of the late South African and Free State cricket captain, Hansie Cronjé, also represented the province in the sport.

Oom Ewie as he was affectionately known, was also the President of Free State Cricket and the Director of Sport at the University of the Free State. He was also well known among lawn bowls fraternity in the Free State

A spokesperson for the family confirmed the passing of Cronje to OFM Sport and said that he went with peace in his heart.

Recently Cronjé and the former Head of SA Cricket, Dr. Ali Bacher, buried the hatchet after many years, and this is something that meant a lot to Cronjé.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the family has decided not to have a funeral at this stage. Friends and family will be notified of any future arrangements.
