Bloemfontein – Eunice Primary School hosted the 2nd annual All Girls’ Sport Festival in Bloemfontein recently in a weekend of sport which hosted 12 schools from across the country.
This year’s tournament doubled in size from the six teams which took part in the first ever meeting last year at Collegiate in Port Elizabeth.
Due to the nature of the tournament being a festival, there was no official final, however, overall winners were appointed.
Flying the Free State flag high, Eunice kept true to their proud sporting tradition and dominated the overall event on the fields and courts. The famous Bloemfontein school claimed the honours in the hockey, netball and tennis, as well as the chess. The other two sporting codes at the festival were cross-county and squash.
Due to Bloemfontein being central, Eunice Primary’s principal, Mrs Maureen Dale, put in the offer at last year’s inaugural festival to host this year’s in the City of Roses.
Speaking to Courant about the festival on the final day of events, Dale said she couldn’t have wished for the event to be a bigger success.
"I couldn’t have wished for anything more. The participation has been phenomenal. The attitude has been fantastic. The spirit in which all the games had been played has been unbelievable, and we’d been getting such lovely feedback from the schools who have thanked us for a fantastic festival," said the proud headmaster.
The school had put in an offer to host the event again next year and try and make it an annual Bloemfontein fixture, however, it had been decided that Clarendon Girls’ Primary School in East London will host the 2015 festival.
The other participating schools were – Aliwal North Primary, Balmoral Primary, Clarendon Girls’ Primary School, Collegiate Junior School for Girls, Durban Girls’ College, Erica Primary, Kingsridge Primary, Pelham Senior Primary School, Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School, Victoria Primary School and Wynberg Girls’ Junior School.
