Eunice Girls’ High School has been crowned national champions in the Sing in Harmonie choir competition this past weekend.

Sing in Harmonie is a school choir competition that provides opportunity for choirs to perform on television. The first series was broadcasted on kykNET Nou in 2014 and at that time, was only held for primary school choirs. Since 2017, the competition has been extended to secondary schools as well.

The choir decided to enter the competition, not because they are so exceptional, but because it would provide a wonderful marketing opportunity for the school since programmes like Jukebox, Bravo, Expresso and Media24 would be involved for coverage.

Every school that entered had to prepare two compositions for the competition, including a religious work and a commercial or contemporary work. At least one composition had to be Afrikaans. “In May 2018 the first round was recorded where the choirs that performed received marks and commentary from three adjudicators,” explained Mag Marais, deputy headmistress of Eunice High School, who is also the manager of the choir.

According to the results, the winning choirs from each region were invited to take part in the national final competition that took place in Gauteng from 21-24 September. 15 choirs took part in the finals.

With a massive choir of 52 girls, led by the conductor, Retha Visser, artist director, Leona Geldenhuys, and choir accompanist, Dana Cilliers, the team was bound to be a success after rehearsing weekly for three and a half hours.

Being crowned the winners, the school received R10 000 in cash, a 10-track CD recording worth R20 000, a music video worth R25 000 and the printing of a 100 CDs worth R2500.
The choir members do not only feel proud of themselves, but proud of the opportunity to promote Eunice, and grateful for the opportunity to touch people’s hearts through their singing.

What is next for the choir? “They are preparing for a trip to Europe in November/December 2018 where they will take part in an international Advent and Christmas Choral competition in Prague as well as a few concerts that have been arranged in Salzburg (Austria), Passau (Germany) and Brixen, (Italy). – Jeretha Oosthuizen
