Escapee gets stiff sentence

DUANE PETRUS – A man was sentenced to life plus 15 years in prison in the Harrismith magistrate’s court today for the murder and robbery of a pastor in Qwaqwa in 2010.
Police spokesperson, Mmako Mophiring, says Tautona Tladi is one of 14 men who escaped from the Namahadi police station in August 2010.
State witnesses testified that Tladi repeatedly hit 70-year-old Mareka Madiha on the head with a brick before he and five other escapees sped off in the pastor’s car.
They were arrested the following day in Bethlehem with the stolen car and Tladi again escaped from prison after being sentenced to five years for escape.
Tladi has been identified as the mastermind by the five other accused, who also received life sentences for the crime.
