ENGO Launches Soup Kitchen to Fight Hunger in Joe Slovo, Bloemfontein

Nearly 400 vulnerable residents of the Joe Slovo informal settlement in Bloemfontein are the focus of a new emergency hunger relief initiative launched by Engo, a Free State-based welfare organisation. The project, which aims to establish a sustainable soup kitchen in the community, comes in response to growing food insecurity affecting elderly residents, unemployed parents, and children.

According to Statistics South Africa, the national unemployment rate remains critically high at 32.9%, with the Free State suffering some of the worst impacts. Doné Kruger, a social worker at Engo Family Care, says the need is urgent and widespread.

“Many of the families in Joe Slovo go entire days without a meal. Hunger has become a constant reality, not a momentary inconvenience,” Kruger told Bloemfontein Courant. “We want to serve more than just food – we want to restore dignity, hope, and a sense of care in this community.”

Engo is calling on local businesses, churches, schools, and private donors to assist in making the project viable. Donations of staple food items such as rice, beans, soup mixes, bread, and protein-rich goods like chicken or soya are especially needed. Monetary contributions are also welcomed to help cover operational costs, including fuel and kitchen equipment.

“Every donation – whether it’s a loaf of bread or a R50 contribution – helps feed a neighbour and build a stronger, more united community,” Kruger added.

Donations can be delivered to Engo Family Care at 26 Van Heerden Road, Wilgehof, Bloemfontein. Potential sponsors or partners can contact the organisation at 051-522-6914 or email Doné Kruger directly at sw4.bfn@engo.co.za.

“We’re not just asking for help,” Kruger said. “We’re inviting the community to be part of something meaningful.”
