Tyson Engelbrecht of Bloemfontein will be targeting a second national title this weekend when he competes in the seventh and final round of the National Motocross Championship at Terra Topia in Johannesburg.

As it stands, Engelbrecht occupies the third spot in the overall standings and a good showing this week could see him being crowned as the national champion in the MX3 class.
Engelbrecht topped the podium during two of the six previous rounds of the national championship in 2019. He also finished second twice and third once.

The rider did not take part during round one, which was staged at Rover MX in Port Elizabeth in February. He did, however, win the next two events on the calendar with a victory at Zone 7 in Cape Town in March, and two months later at this home track, Tempe.

During round four at Dirt Bronco in Krugersdorp, Engelbrecht had to settle for second behind Ian Topliss. In Pietermaritzburg in August, Engelbrecht finished in third overall behind Topliss and Brett Bircher.

Round five at Phakisa in Welkom saw Engelbrecht claim second again behind Topliss, who earned his third straight win.

Recently, Engelbrecht captained the Free State team to a second straight North vs. South title at Tempe, and in the process he also finished first overall in the MX3 class.

Johan Vogelesang (MX2), Jordan Verster (Pro Mini), Joshua Flecter (85cc), Blade Tilley (65cc) and Casey Tilly (50cc) will all be competing at the nationals this weekend as well. – MORGAN PIEK
