Shell Ultra City Pitstop just outside Bloemfontein was abuzz today with every emergency unit in Mangaung on site to bring road safety awareness to residents and travellers alike.

While the initiative by Life Rosepark Hospital and Shell Ultra City Pitstop has been taking place for the past 19 years, this year’s theme is “Chance Takers are Accident Makers”.

Pieter Oosthuizen of Life Rosepark Hospital’s emergency services expressed the importance of taking the correct road and safety measures while travelling this festive season.

“We say that chance takers are accident makers because if you decide not to put a safety belts on your children, they could lose their lives. If you take a chance by driving over a double line you can cause a major accident. If we can cause even just one person to take their safety seriously we will have reached our goal,” added Oosthuizen.

Shell Ultra City Pitstop Bloemfontein, in Kenneth Kaunda Road has become a station where hundreds of motorists refill their cars and themselves. A number of emergency units will be at the station throughout the festive season as it is a central point.

According to owner Herman Steyn the project was established out of their responsibility for travellers. “Hosting it here is good because Bloemfontein is central and many motorists travelling up and down the country pass here. We feel that we have a responsibility to motorists and we want give them something special,” he said.

Pieter Oosthuizen said they hope that the initiative will help to cut down the number of accidents during this busy season.

“We urge people to rest at least for every two hours on the road. They should stop and rest before restarting their journey. People should avoid drinking all together before driving. We know that people want to have fun but please save the drinks for your destination,” said Mohlakoane. –
