Members of the Economic Freedom Fighters in Sasolburg, Free State have taken over unoccupied Zamdela land on Friday.

According to EFF’s Zamdela regional chairperson April Motaung, they have “given away” 2 500 residential sites to people who previously stayed at informal settlements. Motaung said the land that belongs to Metsimaholo Municipality will be called Zimbabwe.

“We don’t need any permission from the municipality as we are giving our people land. This is the land of our people. It is not the land of our municipality. Municipality is just there to serve the community,” he said.

Motaung says around 5000 EFF members chased the police away when they arrived to intervene.

“We chased the police away and told them that they cannot do anything. People of Metsimaholo have taken a decision to take their own residential sites. No one can stand infront of the decision of our people. There were about six police vehicles and we told them that we don’t want to fight with them,” he added.

During the first EFF elective conference in Bloemfontein last December, Julius Malema told his members that it was time they took action and started occupying unused land.
