This coming Saturday the Free State Department of Education will host the Foundation Phase Mini Conference for Mathematics at Reitzpark Primary School in Welkom at 08:30.
According to a statement from the department, the conference is a calculated effort to ensure that the love of mathematics is instilled at foundation phase level and also to demystify it as a difficult subject.
Free State Department of Education MEC, Dr Tate Makgoe, says that there is a skills shortage in the science field and that it needs to be addressed from foundation phase.
It further states that the conference is part of the ‘Maths for All Campaign’ that was launched in 2011, which encourages more learners to continue with the subject after grade 12 and follow careers in science.
According to the department, the focus is on ensuring that primary schools come to the party and not only encourage learners to love the subject but also promote excellent performance. Some of the interventions that the department has put in place are: providing maths kits, robotics kits and national science mobile laboratories for 75 primary schools.
“For the first time we will also provide primary schools with recorded IBP DVDs containing Maths, Science and EFAL lessons for grade 3 to 6,” says Dr Makgoe.
