Joining a beekeeping association offers several benefits for both novice and experienced beekeepers.
According to the owner of The Beeshop, Kenneth Nel, as a novice, joining a local beekeeper’s association and networking with fellow beekeepers are great ways to get insight before committing to expensive equipment.
Nel mentions that you get direct exposure to open days, field days and beekeeping events where all aspects of practical and theoretical beekeeping can be experienced and learned.
Furthermore, he says it also helps you stay up to date, associations provide access to the latest practices, local and national beekeeping news, and research, staying informed and ahead of the curve.
“It is a safe space to ask for support or advice as it is not a random platform open to the public. An association connects you with seasoned, experienced beekeepers who can offer valuable insights, tips, and advice. Having a mentor can significantly enhance your beekeeping journey, saving you money and time,” said Nel.
For those looking to find out more about a beekeeping association, the Free State beekeeping association will be hosting an open day featuring guest speaker Mike Miles, who will be discussing honey bees and the law.
The workshop will take place on 10 August at The Beeshop, from 09:30 till 13:00, with a ‘bring and braai’ commencing from 13:00. Members of the association may attend free of charge while other tickets cost R50 per person.
Those who want to attend can RSVP to FSBAbees@gmail.com.
