The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) confirms that an agreement with the Mangaung Metro Municipality was signed to adjust workers’ salaries. The union’s Provincial Secretary, Thabang Tseuoa, however, says an agreed increment of R2500 is not inclusive of the municipal top management employees.
He says there has also been an agreement to further discuss the retrospective payment of workers in the next Local Labour Forum (LLF) meeting scheduled for this afternoon. Tseuoa adds that an agreement with regard to other issues that were raised in their memorandum of demands is yet to be reached.
He says issues relating to political interference in the administration of the municipality, nepotism, and contract workers who should be made permanent, have also been discussed, and have agreed that there will be more discussions and investigations into these matters.
He says although the signed agreement only pertains to the adjustment of ‘metro salaries’ these issues have been discussed and it was agreed in principle that political interference will cease and cases brought forward will be investigated.
He says they have also agreed in principle that the verification process to make temporary workers permanent is yet to be finalised and the outstanding payment of workers will be settled by the end of this month.
