Dewetsdorp road being cleared after armed robbery

Free State police appeal to motorists travelling on the Dewetsdorp road, about 15km outside Bloemfontein near the Grootvlei Prison, to be patient while the road is being cleared. This comes after an armed robbery this morning in which a Fidelity van was shot at by about ten suspects using five different cars.

Police spokesperson, Ikobeng Hlubi, says the security van was driving in the direction of Dewetsdorp just after 06:00 when it was approached by the vehicles. Shots were fired at the van. Men wearing blue overalls approached the van after it came to a halt in the road. One of the three security guards in the van sustained a head wound after he was hit with a firearm by one of the suspects.

Hlubi says the robbers fled the scene with three firearms belonging to the security guards. No money was taken. She says the injured security officer was taken to a hospital in Bloemfontein. Another security guard sustained minor injuries when he was hit by one of the vehicles used in the robbery. – Christal-Lize Muller
