The Department of Police, Roads and Transport in the Free State said it is not ashamed of dismissing corrupt officials.
According to the department’s MEC, Butana Komphela, there’s nobody who is going to run away from dealing with crime on impunity and think that they have the right to do that. Komphela was speaking at the Justice Crime Prevention and Security Cluster media briefing in Bloemfontein on Wednesday. He said they have arrested and dismissed eight police officers for misconduct at the Caledonspoort border gate.
Komphela explained that they have observered the perpetrators for a long while they took bribes and allowed people to unlawfully cross the border from Lesotho. He added that more than eight traffic officers has also been dismissed for crime and corruption.
“We have many examples that I can show you of people that we have dismissed in the department. I would speak in particular some of the prosecutors have been dismissed that were colluding. There are two prosecutors in Welkom that were dismissed because of taking bribes. Everywhere where we are in this justice cluster, we dismiss people that we know that we have a confidence case against them. Others we even go beyond the internal discipline, we take the crime routine and charge them then they go to jail,” he said.
Komphela further explained that the fight against corruption in both public and private sector is an on-going awareness campaign. He stated that some cases has already been identified which has led to suspension and dismissals.
