The growing global confidence in South Africa as a destination of choice is a result of collaborative efforts between the government and private sector.
According to the Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille, tourism is proving itself a catalyst of economic growth and development. As the festive season approaches, the country has proven to thrive within the industry. “South Africa is ready to welcome the world this festive season with open arms, warm smiles, and world-class experiences,” she said.
Statistics shared by the department of tourism indicates that South Africa welcomed 7 634 261 international tourists from January to September 2025. This is an increase of 1 108 222 visitors compared to the same period last year. In addition, September recorded 846 367 visitors, an increase of 26.9% compared to September 2024.
Collaborative efforts include the implementation of the Tourism Growth Partnership Plan, which includes coordinated destination marketing.
“I want to call on all South Africans to continue showing the spirit of ubuntu and hospitality that defines our nation. Whether you’re in a village, a small dorpie, the city, or at the coast, let’s make every visitor feel at home. Tourism is everyone’s business and together, we can make this the most joyful and successful festive season yet.”
The Free State department of finance, economic development, and tourism (Destea) will this week launch the festive campaign at Gariep Dam on Thursday, 6 November.
According to the department’s MEC Ketso Makume, the tourism summer campaign is aimed at promoting affordable and memorable traveling experiences within the province.
“We call on the people of Free State to explore their own backyard and find its hidden gems. DESTEA’s resorts and reserves across province offer unforgettable experiences at low cost: chalets, braai and picnic areas, camping sites, game driving, fishing and catering for all demographics and year-end functions.
