The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) monitors the dam levels across the country daily and almost all the dams in the Free State remain lower than they were this time last year.
The two big dams in the Province, Gariep and Vanderkloof are currently at 51% and 68% respectively, while Sterkfontein is at 89%. There are several dams that are below 50% such as Knellpoort 35%, Koppies 29% and Rustfontein 28%.
Krugersdrift, Allemanskraal, Armenia, Groothoek and Kalkfontein are all sitting below 20%.
The above percentage simply means that despite the little rains received over the past weeks, there is very little impact on the dam levels.
The communities where is water available are encouraged to continue to use water sparingly and explore opportunities to reuse grey water for gardening and cleaning. The Department continues to deliver water through mobile tanks in communities where taps are running dry.
