DA leader loses husband to cancer

Mojalefa Kopane

Democratic Alliance Free State extended their condolences to the Kopane family after Premier Candidate Patricia Kopane’s husband, Mojalefa Kopane, passed away on Monday after a battle with cancer.

Kopane described her husband of 28 years as a people person who had a passion for education. “He was someone who was loved by everyone. He loved to read and hated ignorance with a passion. Stepping into our house is like walking into the CNA because he loved books and music,” she expressed. The husband, father and grandfather passed away after a diagnosis of prostate cancer about a year ago. “It has not been easy because you have to stand firm. I am a mother as well and have to be there for my children during this time. I have mixed emotions and it really is draining,” said Kopane.

DA Leader in the Provincial Legislature, Roy Jankielsohn, stated that the news made an impact on not only the family but the party as well. “It is a sad day for the family and a sad day for the DA because we in the DA are a close-knit family. So if one person suffers a loss, we all experience that loss,” said Jankielsohn.

A memorial service for the retired educator who used to teach at Ikaelelo Senior Secondary School in Rocklands will be held soon. “I met the school’s principal and management so they are planning to have a service at Rocklands Hall on Thursday,” stated Kopane. As far as the funeral is concerned Kopane stated, “We are planning to bury him on Saturday.” – Nomaqhawe Mtebele
