Democratic Alliance councillors at Setsoto Municipality refused to sign a Secrecy Bill that the municipal speaker issued during a council meeting in Ficksburg.

According to DA’s Chief Whip at the Free State Legislature, David van Vuuren, the municipality forced local councillors last week to sign an “Oath of Secrecy” in order to protect the security of the country. He said Setsoto has embraced the much hated and unconstitutional secrecy bill.

“It is very clear that the municipality wants to hide something. A municipality is there to deliver services to the public which they obviously use tax payer’s money to do that and the moment any document or something is mentioned in a council meeting, it becomes a public document and no longer a secret,” he said.

Van Vuuren says what the municipality is doing is against the constitution and not transparent. He queries what sort of information within Setsoto could threaten the security of the country.

“It is clear that there is something that the municipality wants to hide especially if it is through an institution that they should deliver services. The DA will do everything in its power to see that all the documents are delivered to the people and the process is transparent and democracy has been implemented during this whole process,” he said.
