DA calls for Sedibeng Mayor to step down

SABRINA DEAN – The DA in Sedibeng said Tuesday’s arrest of Mayor Mahole Simon Mofokeng for driving under the influence of alcohol is the second time he has made headlines for drinking during office hours.
Councillor Denis Ryder said the arrest happened in Vanderbijlpark on Tuesday afternoon.
“I haven’t got all the information as yet but on Tuesday afternoon there was some kind of a bumper bashing in Vanderbijlpark and when police arrived on the scene they found the mayor to be intoxicated,” he said.
He said the Mayor was arrested but was later released on R1000 bail. According to The Star, Mofokeng was not required to appear in court and the case against him was postponed to 5 September.
Ryder says the party previously called for a vote of no confidence in Mofokeng after the Mayor fell off his bar stool while drinking at a pub in February. He says Mofokeng claimed at the time his drink had been spiked.
