DA and Agang merger took long-Analyst

REFILWE MEKOA

The merger between DA and Agang SA could have been better, had it happened sooner.

This is according to political analyst Theo Venter. He says the DA will have to look for new positions for prominent Agang members after the DA announced their candidate list. Agang leader Mamphela Ramphele has today accepted an invitation by the Democratic Alliance to be its presidential candidate in this year’s national election.

Venter says DA leader Helen Zille and Ramphele will find a way to make the marriage work ahead of the elections.

“This move is very late and comes when Agang is running out of money and election campaigns not getting much traction. I think making Mamphele the presidential candidate is an interesting move though it is not a serious move as the DA will not really challenge the ANC presidency. Mamphele brings Agang’s people into the DA,” he says.

In 2012 Ramphele refused to be part of the DA, stating it failed to understand the extent to which the country needed to change.
