More than 300 students of the Central University of Technology have gathered and protested outside the campus’ hotel school before an urgent student parliamentary meeting called by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Thandwa Mthembu, in solidarity with the nationwide #FeesMustFall campaign in institutions of higher learning.
The students of CUT have requested a meeting with the Vice Chancellor to address them regarding the, I quote, “unreasonable fee increment” and other financial issues affecting the students.
The students were initially invited to attend the urgent student parliament called by the Vice Chancellor at the Japie van Lil auditorium at 13:00 but have instead gathered at the university’s Amphi Theatre.
While addressing the students, president of the SRC, Solomon Khiba, said that they told the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Henk de Jager, that they have given the VC 5 minutes to come and address them. This comes after the students have waited for an hour.
