Bloemfontein – Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State’s football team’s 1-all draw against Mangaung Unite in one of three Bloemfontein derbies in the SAFA Second Division spoiled their chances of reaching the top spot.
CUT came to the match not only hoping to maintain their unbeaten record, but in need of maximum points to close a gap on the log-leaders, Super Eagles, but coach, Teboho Ramakoa told Courant Sport that there is still a long way to go.
“We are still in it. The second round of the season has started and there are about 15 games remaining so we are confident,” he added.
“Although we were looking to get three points which could have moved us to either first or second spot, we are still happy with a draw. A draw is better than a defeat, especially against a side of Unite’s calibre,” Ramakoa said.
Both sides had plenty of chances to walk away with three points, but poor finishing let them down.
CUT dominated the first half, and were rewarded with an opening goal from Thulani Mxosana, but Unite came back with guns blazing in the second half to level the matters.
Ramakoa said his men were carried away in the second half, which is why they conceded a goal through a set-piece situation.
In other matches, Bloemfontein Young Tigers and Celtic Colts also played to a goalless draw at Clive Solomons while BUBCHU United FC were the only victorious side in the derby, crashing FC Hunters 3-1 at the same venue.
