Culpable homicide case opened after weekend’s fatal accident

A case of culpable homicide was opened by the police this week after a tragic accident left two dead and one other injured on Saturday. 41-year-old Willem van Stander and 19-year-old Franco Cloete were fatally injured when a blue Yamaha motorbike and a white Toyota Corolla collided on the corner of Walter Sisulu Road and Stals Street.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, Van Stander had been trapped in the vehicle when he was discovered. “The 41-year-old male, who was a passenger of the Toyota was trapped inside and another 19-year-old male, who was riding the motorbike was lying on the road next to the bike,” he said.

“Both were declared dead on the scene by paramedics. The jaws of life had to be used to free the passenger’s body from the Toyota,” added Makhele.

The other passenger in the Toyota, a female was taken to the Life Rosepark Hospital for treatment as her right leg was injured. “It is alleged that the Toyota was driving from the Kimberly direction over the robot and the motorbike drove through from opposite side of the robot and hit the Toyota on the left side,” explained Brigadier Makhele.

The case remains under investigation and no arrests have been made yet.
