Qondile Khedama, General Manager: Communications of the Mangaung Metro Municipality lauded the Mangaung Fire Department for its quick response to the blazing inferno that destroyed Cubana in Second Avenue, Bloemfontein.

Although the building was burned to the ground, the fire department battled the blaze gallantly, stopping it from damaging neighbouring buildings.

“The Mangaung Fire Department was on the scene within 6 minutes after getting the call. By responding so quickly they prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings,” Khedama told Bloemfontein Courant.

Khedama, who was cautious to speculate about the cause of the fire, said a full investigation into the cause of the fire will be conducted.

The father of the owner of Cubana, who spoke to Bloemfontein Courant on condition of anonymity, said although there are many speculations to that effect, a gas explosion is highly unlikely. According to him it is more likely that the fire was caused by an electrical fault.

Khedama said at this stage it is difficult to say how much damaged was caused by the fire.

“The building was completely gutted. The fire department couldn’t save anything. It is difficult to give an estimate of the amount of damage. We will have to wait for the owner, who is currently on his way to Bloemfontein to Johannesburg,” said Khedama.
