Bloemfontein Celtic were crowned Telkom Knockout champions for the first time after beating Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban last Saturday. Midfielder, Joel Mogorosi, scored a controversial goal in the 48th minute of the match. Although the victory was attributed to a massive team effort, it was the efforts of especially captain and defender, Thabo Nthethe, that earned him the man of the match award, and also the title of the Courant Sport Star of the Week.
Soccer experts say Nthethe was “disciplined, decisive and commanding*” in defence against a Mamelodi Sundowns side that was viewed by many as favourites to win the lucrative competition. His role on the field was at all times befitting of a leader and a captain; it was professional and exemplary. Nthethe has also been called up for national duty in the Bafana Bafana squad over the last few months, where he continues to impress. There is no doubt that Nthethe will also make his mark in coach, Gordon Igesund’s squad when they take on the rest of Africa’s elite in the African Cup of Nations, which gets underway in January 2013.
