Councillor and farmer get bail for stock theft

DUANE PETRUS – A local government councillor and a farmer are among five suspects who were granted collective bail of R25 000 in the Harrismith Magistrate’s Court today on charges of stock theft. Aaron Mdakala, councillor at the Maluti-a-Phofung municipality, farmer Jan Bezuidenhout, Sifiso Zungu, Papi Mthombeni and Bongani Dube each received R5 000 bail. Free State police spokesperson, Mmako Mophiring, says they received information that led them to Bezuidenhout’s farm, where they found the carcasses of three stolen cows last week. It is alleged that the stolen meat was sold to local businesses and families preparing for funerals. Their next court appearance is scheduled for 29 November.
