Correctional Services official in court after colleague’s death

Suspended Correctional Services official, Mojalefa Letele (49), appeared in the Rouxville Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Letele was arrested on Thursday 6 February 2020 and appeared in the Rouxville Magistrate’s Court on 7 February 2020. His case has been postponed to 27 February 2020 for a formal bail application. He will remain in custody.

According to the police 35-year-old Nomsa Joyce Stuurman was fatally stabbed at the Goedemoed Correctional Centre on 29 March 2019, while her colleague was also stabbed and raped while being held hostage by an inmate. The incident happened while both victims were on duty.

Free State SAPS tactical response team then forcefully entered the building in an effort to rescue the two hostages. A 37-year-old suspect, Jongikhaya Samsam, who was already serving two life terms, was arrested.

During his court appearance, Samsam implicated the Correctional Services official, Mojalefa Letele. He told the court how he was allegedly coerced by Letele to murder and rape the victims.

Samsam was sentenced by Bloemfontein High Court on 31 October 2019 to two life terms for murder, rape and kidnapping of Correctional Service officials. The investigation into Letele’s involvement in the murder and rape at the Correctional Centre continues.
