The Free State Department of Education is in the spotlight yet again, this following the death of various learners in the province.

The appalling report of learners allegedly stabbed by their fellow learners was disclosed last week. It was reported that 13-year-old Phemelo More was stabbed at Kegomodiswe Primary and 19-year-old Grade 12 learner was stabbed by another learner at a matric camp at Tempe in Bloemfontein. A Grade 9 learner at Lerato Thando Secondary School had also been stabbed by a Grade 11 learner. The Free State Education spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, had raised concerns on the upsurge of the violence having erupted in schools recently.

This morning, the Free State education department woke up to the shocking news of learners who had succumbed to death after being struck by lightning. Ndaba said that learners from Oos Intermediate and Mokitlane Primary School were struck by lightning. According to him, the surviving Grade 5 learner is currently receiving medical attention, while the Grade 3 and 4 learners have died. He said the family members, friends and fellow learners are receiving psyco-social support.  In addition, Ndaba has called on all management teams, school governing bodies and learners to strengthen school safety and build a strong relationship with the police.
