A 36-year-old man came to Park Road police station yesterday to report that he had been robbed in DF Malherbe Avenue, near the University of the Free State (UFS) on Wednesday night at 21:00. He alleged that he was walking in the street in possession of cash of R5 500.00 and a cellphone, when he was confronted by four men and robbed from both the cash and the cellphone.
After thorough interrogation by Detective Warrant Officer Pieter Louw of Parkweg Detectives it turned out that his accounts of the events do not add up and allegedly he had used the money belonging to his employer and was unable to pay it back. He also allegedly sold his cellphone and then claimed that it had been stolen.
The man was charged with perjury and is currently in detention at Park Road. He will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Monday, 17 August 2015 on this charge.
The police would like to warn the community not to report false cases because the truth will come out and you will be charged. By reporting false cases, especially to benefit from insurance claims, people also waste valueable time and resources of the SAPS to investigate only to find out that the complaint does not carry water.
This report was issued by Park Road Police Services.
