The community of W-Section in Botshabelo have pleaded with the Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) to fix a leaking sewerage pipe that literally leaves them with a bad taste in the mouth.
They say they have raised the issue with their local councillor, Nkgatle Lebona, on countless occasions.
According to some community members, the smell is unbearable when it rains and during the hot summer days.
Thabiso Kgalala, a resident in W-Section told Bloemfontein Courant the smell comes from the sewerage pipeline that goes to the outskirts of W-Section and joins the main stream from which animals drink. “This not only unhealthy for us, but for the animals too.”
Another resident, Maria Mokete, said during the summer the smell becomes so unbearable that they sometimes brush their teeth thinking that the smell comes from their mouths.
“This smell is not healthy for us because the sewerage pipeline is just near our house. We have asked the counsellor to solve this problem, but with no luck. I have even contracted TB.
“I thought things were improving when the government gave us flushing toilets, but the blocked drains have become an everyday ordeal.”
Bloemfontein Courant asked councillor Lebona about the sewage the community is complaining about. He promised to send engineers to solve the problem and said they were working on the problem as this has been going on for a very long time. – Lebakeng Nkabi
