Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Minister, Zweli Mkhize, will visit the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality tomorrow as part of his oversight visit. A statement to this effect was released on the Cogta website earlier today.
During his visit Mkhize will engage with the Free State Provincial Government and a few of its municipalities to discuss intervention programmes for the municipalities in the province that were deemed “dysfunctional” and “distressed” in Auditor General, Kimi Makhwetu’s report last month.
According to the statement the visit forms part of the Back to Basics programme aimed at building functional municipalities. The purpose of the visit will be to identify and agree on critical and priority challenges for ministerial intervention.
Mkhize will also visit the following nine municipalities: Mafube, Masilonyana, Maluti-A-Phofung, Kopanong, Letsemeng, Mantsopa, Nketoana, Tokologo and Mohokare.
The support national government intends to offer to these troubled municipalities will focus on the financial management, governance and administration and finally, service delivery and infrastructure functions in these organizations.
