Clever Boys stun Amakhosi in season opener

The 2016/17 Premier Soccer League season kicked off on Tuesday night and the opening match provided a first big upset of the season.

Elias Pelembe and Thulani Hlatshwayo found the back of the net for Wits at the Bidvest Stadium for a 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs, while Lorenzo Joao Gordinho scored for the Amakhosi.

Following the match, the Chiefs coach, Steve Khompela, said they played into the hands of the Clever Boys.

“I think one of the things that we did wrong tonight was we played to their strength, we allowed them to keep the ball in the air and didn’t bring the ball down and play.”

In Polokwane the newly promoted Baroka FC were held to a 1-1 draw by Roger de Sa’s Ajax Cape Town.

In Port Elizabeth Chippa United kicked off their campaign with a 2-1 win over Free State Stars thanks to a brace by Rhulani Manzini, with Charles Kampi scoring for Ea Lla Koto.

The brand new side, Cape Town City F.C. made a big statement in their first ever PSL game with a 2-0 win over Polokwane City in the Mother City.

On Wednesday Orlando Pirates face Golden Arrows, Platinum Stars take on SuperSport United in Rustenburg and Bloemfontein Celtic are hosting Maritzburg United at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium.

All these matches kick off at 19:30. – MORGAN PIEK
