DUANE PETRUS – Two suspects have been arrested after a panel van transporting cigarettes was hijacked in the Sasolburg CBD this morning.
Police spokesperson, Peter Kareli, says two men approached the van’s driver just after 09:30 while his colleague was inside a shop and pointed him with a firearm.
The suspects then sped off with the vehicle and the driver ran straight to the police station.
Kareli says the suspects were arrested on the R59 on their way to Vanderbijl Park shortly after the incident.
Police are still searching for the firearm that was used in the robbery. The suspects will appear in the Sasolburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday to face charges of hijacking and armed robbery.
Kareli says it is too early to link to suspect to a similar incident in Sasolburg two weeks ago where robbers got away with R90 000 worth of cigarettes.
