#ChildTragedies: Teen girl to appear in NW court for murder

The 17-year-old girl alleged to have stabbed a high school learner to death in the North West last week will appear before the Atamelang Magistrate’s Court near Delareyville today.

North West police spokesperson, Adéle Myburgh, says the incident occurred just after the victim, 18-year-old Katlego Lesagae, got off a bus outside Kopanelo Secondary School on Friday morning, 17 January 2020. Myburgh says the suspect allegedly accosted Lesagae and stabbed him with an unknown object in the chest. He was taken to a local clinic, where he was certified dead upon arrival.

The North West Education Department has confirmed the deceased was a learner at the above-mentioned school, while the alleged suspect was not. Myburgh says the motive behind the murder is unknown. Provincial Education Department spokesperson, Elias Malindi, said previously that an urgent plan needs to be developed and implemented to combat the increasing violence in the country’s schools.
