Chess lovers from Heidedal and those looking to learn chess are invited to attend the Heidedal Chess Foundation’s event, which will be hosted at the park in Williams Plaatjies Street in Opkoms, tomorrow.
According to Meloney Shariff, the Assistant Director at the Foundation, the idea came about just before lockdown. “I always said that my dream is to have a tournament in a park or a random open space as I believe that this will attract kids and expose them to the game of chess.”
She further explained that the reasoning behind chess in the park was because they wanted to show the youth in Heidedal that chess was not a boring game. “Our aim is to attract more kids to join our team. We want kids to be busy with activities to keep them out of the street and away from negative things.”
The Heidedal Chess Foundation invites parents to bring learners of all ages, from the age of five. The entry fee will be R30 and the tournament starts at eight o’ clock. For more info contact 073 881 1697.
