Cheetahs triumphant in George

The Cheetahs were triumphant in George in the SA Cup with a 46 – 14 win over the SWD Eagles. Most in his element was Namibian-born hooker and Cheetah captain, Chucky van der Westhuizen, who scored a hat-trick in the match.

The Eagles scored the first try in the 4th minute, but Van der Westhuizen hit back 15 minutes later.  On the half-hour mark, James Verity-Amm scored another try, with Van der Westhuizen scoring his second just before half-time.  The half-time score of 24 – 7 was also a reflection of poor discipline among the hosts, who lost two players due to yellow cards in the first half.

The first points in the second half only came in the 58th minute when right-wing Sbu Nkosi went over the line for the Cheetahs, but the Eagles hit back quickly, scoring a try less than 8 minutes later. Another yellow card for the hosts did not go unpunished and Van der Westhuizen scored his third try with 8 minutes remaining. Oakdale alumnus, Vernon Paulo had the final say and scored the Cheetah’s eighth try.

The win in George has lifted the Cheetahs into third place on the SA Cup table with 22 points.  They play the Falcons away next Saturday.
