The Toyota Cheetahs will be playing in a Currie Cup promotion-relegation match against the SWD Eagles next week.
They will tackle the First Division champions, the SWD Eagles, on Tuesday evening at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.
The Cheetahs finished the single-round Currie Cup at the bottom of the log after losing all six of their matches in the tournament.
The Eagles, in their turn, earned the right to contest for a spot in the Premier Division after they won the First Division on Friday evening by beating the Valke in the final at Outeniqua Park in George.
The Cheetahs were in the difficult position of having to field teams in the Currie Cup and Guinness Pro14 this season, and this was a contributing factor in the team not being at full strength during the world’s oldest domestic rugby competition.
While the news is disappointing that they have to play in a promotion-relegation match, the Cheetahs welcome the challenge. It makes for a tough eight days for the Cheetahs as they will be playing in three matches over this period. On Saturday the Cheetahs face the Cardiff Blues in the Pro14, Tuesday the Eagles and next week Sunday they host Munster.
The Cheetahs did indicate earlier that they will field their strongest possible side in the promotion-relegation match.
